How to Win Take 5

Winning a prize in Take 5 is relatively easier than it is in other major U.S. lotteries. The reason for this is the ball matrix (5/39), which offers better odds at each of the four divisions. Prizes are paid on a percentage of ticket sales, rather than using fixed prize amounts, with the exception of the Division 4 prize where you automatically win a free Quick Pick for a future draw.

New York Take 5 Prize Divisions
Division Matched Numbers Odds of Winning Payout (as % of total pool fund)
4 2 main numbers 1 in 9 Free Quick Pick
3 3 main numbers 1 in 102 50%
2 4 main numbers 1 in 3,386 30%
1 5 main numbers 1 in 575,757 20%
The overall odds of winning any prize in Take 5 are approximately 1 in 8.77.

How Take 5 Works

At 10:30pm every night, the Take 5 draw takes place at the lottery headquarters in New York. Tickets cost just $1 each, and it’s possible to play up to five boards per ticket.

To play, you need to pick five numbers from 1-39, or opt for a Quick Pick to have your numbers selected at random by the lottery terminal.

During the draw, five numbers are drawn from the drum, which can be watched during live broadcasts in the U.S. These numbers make up the winning combination for that draw.

If no players are lucky enough to match all five numbers to win the jackpot, the entire prize fund for Division 1 will roll down and get shared between winners in Division 2, meaning that it’s entirely possible to win a bigger prize than usual in any given draw.
